Faith in the Line

Who taught you to drive a car?  Getting your drivers license is that rite of passage for teenagers everywhere.  I remember that fist spin around the block with my brother, John, talking me through the finer points of driver safety and navigating turns.  Perhaps the best tip I heard in those learning days was about focus—especially at night.  We’ve all been driving at night when the oncoming traffic conveniently forgets to click off their high beams.  The stress is only magnified when it is raining outside.  How to drive when you are half blind—that is a skill.

John taught me that it all about focus.  When faced with blinding oncoming traffic—force your focus to the white edge line on the side of the road.  Focus and stare at that white line.  Concentrate on it with your eyes; hug it with your passenger side tires.  His little tip has saved me from disaster on numerous occasions.

So, what about our focus?  On what do you focus?  It seems to me that focus is a key element to success in life.  Looking back on the good days and the bad days—personally and professionally—those in which I accomplished tasks and took steps forward—are the days when I was focused.  The challenge, of course, is what to focus upon.  This is a question of calling.  What is God calling you towards: in personal life, professional life, and family life.  How has God gifted you in order to fulfill His purpose?  Note easy questions to answer on a whim.

Having strong focus is an act of faith in itself.  To follow that while line is to have faith that it won’t lead you off the road.  Faith is a great thing when we place our faith in things and people that are faithful.  For this reason alone it is vital that our focus hones in on the things that God calls us towards.  Only He is faithful.  Only He will lead you safely through this life.
