Philippians 2:8
He humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross
I remember taking my dog, Memphis, to obedience class when he was a puppy. He was the star pupil and did the best job of all the dogs there—he was the only dog there. Even still, during that training he learned to listen to some simple commands: when to sit, when to stay, when to come, when to eat, when to shake, and how to walk on a leash without pulling. He learned some behaviors better than others. I wonder if we wouldn’t do well to learn some similar “simple” commands from our Master. When to sit (and listen and wait on the lord); when to stand (up for Christ, for the downtrodden, and for the weak); when to come (and follow Christ on the journey he is calling us into); when to eat (and be refreshed by daily bread and know from whom this nourishment comes); when to shake (hands with other sojourners and be kind—even when we don’t feel like it); and how to walk on a leash without pulling (towards the places we want to go instead of following the places he leads). Perhaps we could all use a little obedience training from the obedient Son who gave of his life for us.
Prayer: Lord my Master, open my ears to hear your commands in my life. Amen.
